THE CORKTOWN MAN
in story and song

The story of the Corktown Man is set in an area of southern Ontario, Canada to which many Irish came during the early to mid 1800s. The action takes place prior to and during the week leading to the July 1st celebrations of 1867, marking the birth of Canadian Confederation.

It is the story of the love between an Irish born, Canadian lad and an unusually gifted local girl, a singing contest and the tavern of an inn, where a long-suffering separation between them comes to a dramatic
and happy end.

Through lively narrative, music and song, travel back to a time when Irish men and women, having left their native soil due to poverty, oppression and starvation, were establishing new lives and helping to build new communities in a new land. It was a time and place that offered freedom and opportunity, but which also had its challenges and dangers. A time and place in which a caring community and the celebration of the birth of ‘a new northern nation’ helped reunite two young lovers and created lasting bonds between two countries.

The performance includes many traditional Canadian and Irish tunes of the era, as well as others more recently written and included in the story.

‘The Corktown Man’ is performed by Irish born, Canadian actor/writer Mark Finnan, Canadian traditional musicians/singers Glen Caradus and John Hoffman

Speakers
Billy Clifford has been growing organic vegetables commercially for the past 16 years on his smallholding near Kenmare, Co.Kerry. He has established one of the most successful organic horticultural enterprises in the country through marketing to hotels, restaurants and other local outlets. He will talk about his experience in developing his business, the benefits of polytunnel production and how he manages irrigation on his farm.

An organic food project is operated on Inis Mór called ‘Bia Arainn’. Following a training programme on the island a group of growers put up polytunnels and also produce outdoor crops. Produce is marketed to local hotels, restaurants and through a market stall on the island during the summer months. Members of Bia Arainn will outline the progress of the project to date.

Jason Horner is one of a number of National Organic Demonstration Farms and has been growing organic vegetables on 4 acres since 1997 on his farm in Co. Clare. As well as outdoor production he grows protected crops in 8 polytunnels. Jason markets his produce mainly through a market stall in Ennis, Co. Clare. He will talk about setting up his business and will deal in particular with pest, disease and weed control in organic systems.

Pat Lenihan is a bee keeper based in Co. Cork. He is a member of the Irish Beekeepers Association and also a member of the Executive Council of the Federation of Beekeepers.
He will talk on bee keeping for beginners and setting up a small scale bee keeping business.

Graham Strouts runs a two-year diploma course in permaculture in Kinsale and is knowledgeable on peak oil and climate change. He is also involved in the transition towns movement that originated in Kinsale.
